The problem with last year’s Graduation was that it only came in digipak form. I think this is one of the most interesting piece of ‘cover art’, since it is open to interpretation.808s sees Kanye West delivering the goods once again when it comes to album packaging. It could also be interpreted as a brag, showing that he doesn’t need fancy artwork or excessive promotion to sell his album. This type of rebellion was also seen during the punk-rock era, of which the genre of punk-rock itself was created upon the idea that rock and roll had been taken over by commercial artists and became too ‘tame’. It is though he is standing up against record labels who use artists to make commercial music just to make money. The lack of artwork to promote the album and the raw production makes it seem like he is simply making music that he enjoys, instead of making music for profit like a lot of artists. I interpret this as Kanye going against commerciality in music. The only things that differentiate the album is the discrete lettering around the CD and the red/orange tape. Production is described as ‘very raw’ by Daft Punk who produced 4 songs on the album. The minimalist design is likely a reflection of the minimal feel of the album. There is no information online about who designed the ‘artwork’ for Yeezus, but it is likely an idea from Kanye himself. This may be the reasoning behind his next solo studio album. This lead Kanye to go on a twitter rant, stating ‘So Nirvana can have a naked human being on they cover, but I can’t have a PAINTING of a monster’ and ‘In the ’70s, album covers had actual nudity…It’s so funny that people forget that…Everything has been so commercialized now’. When the explicit album was first revealed, it became banned quickly. I don’t think there is any deeper message to the cover, I believe that it is just to compliment the title using humor, giving a visual representation of Kanye’s ‘beautiful dark twisted fantasy’.

It is composed in a very ordinary way, with the focal point being on Kanye and the Phoenix with a plain, empty background, which contrasts against the extremely unordinary image. The most explicit album cover features a cartoon-like Kanye West with a one-legged, no-armed, tailed Phoenix, which I think compliments the album title very well. These covers are in the typical style of Condo, as shown below in his other pieces of artwork: He is ‘an American contemporary visual artist working in the mediums of painting, drawing, sculpture and printmaking’, currently living and working in New York City. George Condo was born in 1957 in Concord, New Hampshire. This cover was designed by George Condo, and is one of the many designs made for the album, as shown below. The strong red is the only colour that really stands out on the cover, suggesting that Kanye has a strong heart, but has been hurt and emotionally damaged, causing everything else to turn sombre. I see the deflated heart itself being a clear metaphor for the emptiness and vulnerability Kanye was feeling, due to the events that had occurred. The deflated heart is composed in the center of the cover, although not taking up a large portion of it, leaving the surrounding area empty. They go on to say ‘This stripped down look may not have been entirely new, but Kanye was the first artist to successfully pull off and popularize such an aesthetic’, after placing it #1 on the 50 best rap album covers of the past 5 years. Complex called the minimal approach ‘groundbreaking at the time’. The cover itself was also a departure from the usual ‘loud’ covers Kanye used in his previous albums. The original cover features nothing but a deflated balloon in the shape of a heart with a subdued strip of swatches, photographed by Kristen Yiengst, and designed by Virgil Abloh (creative director of the Off-White and Louis Vuitton brands) West said that he wished to classify the album in a genre called ‘pop art’, stating that it was the musical equivalent of the visual art movement. West described this album as ‘therapeutic’. These things occured whilst he was still adapting to his pop star status. Months later, his fiancee Alexis Phifer ended their relationship. In 2007, Kanye lost his mother after complications during cosmetic surgery. It is also said to influence a new wave of rappers and singers who adopted 808’s style. It was very different from his previous albums, using sparse electronic sounds and auto-tune instead of conventional hip-hop sounds. The album was created in a difficult time in Kanye’s life, and featured lyrics exploring themes of loss, alienated fame and heartbreak. 808’s & Heartbreak was Kanye’s forth studio album, recorded between September and October of 2008 and released November 24th 2008.
